Will MonitorIT work on peer to peer networks? I have a client with a Windows Home Server network that is a peer to peer network of one server and 6 client workstations. Windows Home Server is based on Windows 2003 Server but does not use a domain and consequently no Active Directory.

Yes the central MonitorIT machine can monitor any Windows server or workstation machine (OS versions NT SP4 or later including 64-bit Windows) and any Linux/Unix server machine located anywhere. This is because MonitorIT does use an Agent service that is installed on each Windows or Linux/Unix machine being monitored.
The Agent communicates with the central MonitorIT over a secure TCP connection that can use even the public internet to establish the connection between the Agent and the central MonitorIT. From the monitored servers and workstations, only a single port (82 by default) needs to be open outbound only so that Agents can initiate the connection back to the central MonitorIT. Once the Agent connects, the central MonitorIT sends to the Agent all the appropriate monitoring rules, and from then on, the Agent does all its monitoring locally using standard Windows API calls. The Agent service runs under the default ‘Local System’ account.
The Agent does not require Active Directory and Windows servers and workstations on a local peer-to-peer network can be monitored by a remote central MonitorIT once the Agents are installed. |
